2017 Health Service Journal Awards
Growing Points is delighted to announce that Leeds Hospitals NHS Trust has been shortlisted for the award in the Workforce category. This is for our Hidden Talents Project where we work with the City of Sanctuary and Retas in Leeds who identify people with talent and ambition; we work with Leeds Hospitals who offer them the opportunity of either an apprenticeship or a role immediately depending on their previous experience. Growing Points’ volunteers help them apply for roles and support them through their training.
We had a fantastic second set of results for our Hidden Talents project in Leeds this summer. Of 13 candidates 5 have been recruited as Apprentices at a living wage and 3 have been recruited directly to roles as Clinical Support Workers. The long term aim is for these recruits to train as nurses at Leeds Hospitals. The first recruitment round was equally successful and we have a waiting list for the third and fourth rounds being planned.
This is a win win situation: for the Trust who are keen to ensure their workforce properly reflects the diversity of their patients and the refugees who have found it hard to get jobs and are now able to support themselves and their families.
Everyone feels the scheme has been a great success. The aim is to recruit 25 people a year onto the scheme. We have a similar project in Sheffield with plans to roll it out to other cities later in the year. Zahira, one of our happy customers, says “Hidden Talents means everything to me. I had lost all my confidence and had no job. I am now being paid and have regained my self esteem.
The winners of the HSJ Awards will be announced at a ceremony in London on 22 November.
